Is Technology Bringing Us Closer or Farther Away?

Technology can bring us closer to faraway places while also distracting us from our surroundings. While looking at images or posts of places hours away, you are not paying attention to life around you. At the same time, you are able to share the life around you with people who aren’t near you. So the question is, does technology bring us closer or farther away from our lives?

“I simply do not buy the idea that we aren’t fully human, aren’t fully whole, just because we can talk to our friends whenever we want, without any consideration for the poxy limitations space and time used to set on us. This brings us closer, it doesn’t set us apart. Why settle for one conversation when you can have five on five different platforms?” says Will Lloyd on

Technology may distract us from what is right in front of us, but it brings us closer to what’s not. In any given moment, you can contact someone far away, buy an item from a store in a different country, or find information about a city you have never been to. Social media and the internet are a great way to feel close to people and places you aren’t around. Facetime, Skype, Snapchat, and Facebook are all ways to communicate with people you wish you could see on a regular basis. Technology has allowed us to share our lives with those we can’t physically share our lives with.

Instant access to information is another great thing about technology. You can look up the score to a sports game, map out how to get somewhere or research the best restaurants around you immediately. It makes life easier. This instant access to technology can better your present life by giving you answers to questions you may have at any given moment.

You may take a moment to break away from the people you are spending time with to look up the answer your cousin asked you at a birthday party or your boss asked in a meeting. Technology doesn’t necessarily distract you from present life conversations, it can make communication easier when you don’t know the right way to say what you are trying to say.

Although technology may bring us closer it can also distract us from what is right in front of us. Before technology, people had higher attention spans and gave their full attention to what was in front of them. It’s easy to get distracted when your phone goes off and you want to see why, but is checking that notification respectful to your surroundings? It depends on the situation. There are times and places where using your smartphone is not acceptable, but many times it can add benefit to the situation.

Our goal at Tablio is to bring people together. We use our touch screen tablets to entertain guests while they wait for their food. The games we offer on these tablets have multiplayer options so families and friends can compete and play against one another. This makes communication easier and gives guests a more entertaining way to interact with one another.

Technology doesn’t have to push people farther away. Depending on the situation, technology can bring you closer to what is far away and what is close to you.
